Clyde A. Erwin High School (CAEHS) welcomed third graders from West Buncombe Elementary School (WBES) as both schools whipped up something yummy in the Family & Consumer Sciences class. Students participated in a hands-on foods lab that challenged them in areas of teamwork, math and science. This opportunity also allowed the high school students to be mentors to the younger kids.
“The Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) students stepped up to be excellent role models in this combined activity,” said Family & Consumer Science teacher Lacey Davis. “FCCLA members gained leadership and communication skills while also having fun.”
Some of the activities included safety and sanitation, measuring ingredients, preparation, serving and cleanup. WBES students with the help of CAEHS students made chocolate chip pancakes and lemonade.
“High school students have the opportunity to teach what they know to younger students in order to be successful in leadership and communication as they complete cooking lab,” Ms. Davis said. “Students develop a sense of community and connect that what they are doing matters. The excitement in the room from all ages was contagious.”
